Why Is It Important to Get Regular Eye Exams?

Your vision health is as just as important as other aspects of health. Beyond testing your vision, comprehensive exams can detect changes in your eye health and recognize eye diseases or conditions early, even if there are no noticeable symptoms.

During an eye exam, we may even be able to detect other health conditions in our patients, such as diabetes and high blood pressure.

What to Expect at Your Routine Eye Exam

Since comprehensive eye exams are so important, we recommend that patients visit us annually, especially if you are managing or are at risk for an eye condition. You’ve probably seen the Snelleneye chart, used to check for visual acuity, but in addition to this, we use our technology to check for a variety of vision factors such as visual clarity, eye movement, eye focus, and overall health.

Throughout the exam, we will discuss our processes, your medical history, and potential treatment options we have available depending on what may work best for you.

Optomap Retinal Imaging

Adding the Optomap retinal imaging technology into our comprehensive exams allows us to see an ultra-wide field image and provides a better view of the retina. This is important to catch any abnormalities and to compare images each year to see any changes. Retinal imaging is a key tool in detecting diseases such as glaucoma or diabetic retinopathy.

Optomap retinal image allows us to get a detailed view of the retina without dilation, so you can go about your day without any blurriness.

Humphrey Visual Field Testing

In our comprehensive exams, we also test our patient’s visual fields. The visual field refers to the area of vision where objects are visible during a steady gaze in one direction. When testing the visual field, you could examine at central vision or peripheral vision to varying degrees.

The Humphrey Visual Field Test assists in detecting any abnormalities within the visual field by assessing the retina’s sensitivity to light. This can help us look for signs of conditions like glaucoma.
